Old Man River, 17, of Erie, PA, passed away peacefully in the arms of his foster dad on Sunday, May 7, 2023. The son of an unknown father and mother, Old Man River arrived in the care of the Erie Humane Society after a good Samaritan found him roaming alone on a Presque Isle State Park beach on April 14, 2023.

Despite being blind, deaf, and FIV+, Old Man River enjoyed the simple things in life including lounging on his favorite pillow and getting all kinds of love and pets from the shelter staff. Shortly after his arrival, he was diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism which he controlled with medication. Even though he did not enjoy taking it, he understood its importance. On April 25, 2023, he was welcomed, with open arms, into a loving foster family so he could enjoy all of life’s comforts during his remaining time earth-side.

Even in ill-health, Old Man River exuded authority and confidence. He was a curious cat who loved to explore. He was friendly and loved to be close to his foster family. At night, his chosen place to sleep was right near his foster dad’s head. He was a simple cat, who never argued or complained, and he appreciated his life’s blessings. On his final day, he accompanied his foster family outside and enjoyed basking in the sun and napping in the cool grass.

Old Man River had no known next of kin. He is survived by his loving foster parents, Brian and Meg, a canine sister, Freya, a canine brother, Ansel, six feline siblings, the EHS Cattery Team, and the EHS Staff, all of Erie.

Private funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the EHS Pet Wellness Clinic’s Pet Loss Services. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Erie Humane Society in Old Man River’s memory.
